Final Spot Illustration

Image
This is my final design for the Spot illustration.  I have changed the way that the people come down the page because something didn't look right about the previous design. It feels far more balanced now and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I think these illustrations tell a bit of a story about this topic and its easily readable for an audience who may not know anything on the subject. Every iteration even the very small ones has comes together to make this design what it has become.

Spot Illustration iterations

Version 1 I liked this design for the most part but the illustration at the top of the page just didn't flow so well with the rest and it also wasn't clear what the message was. It was supposed to show how the people of Myanmar are being ignored but I'm not sure a viewer would understand that so I decided to take a different approach. There is also something off about the layout but I haven't decided what that must be yet.  Version 2    In this second iteration I changed the top left illustration and I think this version is far better and has a clearer message. Now I have a nice trio of images that work well together connected by the people who are at the heart of this editorial. There is still something that needs changing about the layout before the final version.

Final Cover

Image
Final editorial cover: I'm really pleased with the outcome of this cover. I received a lot of helpful feedback which I implemented and I think this is a really strong cover as a result. I have used lots of symbolism and subliminal messaging and have considered carefully the colours I used and why. I think this cover is easy to understand as a viewer. I struggled with the type as you can see documented in my iterations but this outcome was the best result that I have produced. Moving the title to the left made the page feel more balanced and therefore easier on the eye.

Cover Iterations

Image
Iterations and why I changed them: This is the first completed cover design before adding the type furniture. I am really pleased with this as a base design for the cover as I have really thought about every single detail to make it as visually interesting and recognisable as possible. This was my first attempt at adding type. I asked for some feedback as I struggle in this area but I could tell something was a bit off. I wanted to remove the background box on the title but struggled to figure out how to do it. The text was also too small and not very visually appealing.  This iteration is where it really starts to get close to being finished. I figured out how to remove the title box and I simplified and enlarged the text so that it was easier to see. There is also some subliminal messaging in the way that the type obscures the view of the people. This is the last iteration before the final one. I received some more feedback which I implemented. The people at the lower left...

Refining some ideas

Image
Took my own reference as couldn't find the angle I wanted and I can't draw too well from my imagination! I think this idea is a really strong contender for this editorial because its very to the point and I  think it looks good as a cover. The refugees show the large number of people affected and the book very clearly shows oppression.  If I was to use this design I would refine the people and make it clearer and clean it all up and I would try to include some strong red somewhere in there but not sure where yet, because red is a very tyrannical colour and also draws the eye. I might leave the faces blank, this wasn't initially the plan but since i didn't bother to fill them in in this mock up I actually like how it looks as it shows their identity is not being considered on an individual level. This one I almost didn't bother refining as I didn't like it as much but actually I think it looks really good.      Ive reused some elements from the previous bu...

Developing these ideas

Image
Following on from my first thumbnails I honed in on some of the ideas that were working.  I really like some of these ideas, particularly the flashlight idea because it symbolises how we need to shine a light on the topic but it also shows scale which ive been really liking. I also like the wave idea but I need to develop this further to see how it could look when fully fleshed out. The scale of the feet on the pavement works well too with the tiny refugees under their feet as it shows how they aren't being noticed and there is countless of them. The forgotten or ignored element is the part I have decided to focus on in this topic. Since its such a broad topic its important to focus on one element of it so that the message is clear. The image with the SOS point I think is too obvious and the final design is very seasonal which I'm not sure is a good idea for this despite the time of year we are currently in. Sarah gave me the idea of censoring some of the title just leaving k...

Thumbnails

Image
Creating the first thumbnail ideas. As is my usual fashion of thumbnails, its hard for others to make out what they are but it makes sense to me! I had a talk with Molly and Sarah after these initial ideas and we agreed that the more detailed ideas don't work as well for the editorial cover because they aren't to the point enough. I want to focus on symbolising the idea in a very clear and instant way . They could work better for spot illustrations. The images with scale are working well and shows very instantly the magnitude of the issue. I also like the one where the soldiers head is cut off, as if he has no identity.  I now need to explore these ideas further.

Words are powerful

Image
I had a few initial ideas when we were given this brief. My first thought was to do it on the topic of men who hate women, as I had just recently read an insightful book on the subject. I spent the afternoon having some pretty interesting conversations with peers trying to see where my passion lays. I settled on Eating disorder specifically how they affect young people, I had some visual ideas in my mind for this topic. After completing this A2    page of initial imagery it became clear to me that this was not the right topic for me, I was struggling to feel passionate towards it and didn't have many ideas beyond basic visuals that come up immediately for anybody.     So I went back to researching... I decided to look into currently ongoing conflicts to see if there was any I hadn't heard of. To my surprise there was loads I hadn't heard of including the Myanmar conflict which has been going on for decades and still has a huge number of casualties yea...
