Refining some ideas
Took my own reference as couldn't find the angle I wanted and I can't draw too well from my imagination!I think this idea is a really strong contender for this editorial because its very to the point and I think it looks good as a cover. The refugees show the large number of people affected and the book very clearly shows oppression.
If I was to use this design I would refine the people and make it clearer and clean it all up and I would try to include some strong red somewhere in there but not sure where yet, because red is a very tyrannical colour and also draws the eye. I might leave the faces blank, this wasn't initially the plan but since i didn't bother to fill them in in this mock up I actually like how it looks as it shows their identity is not being considered on an individual level.
This one I almost didn't bother refining as I didn't like it as much but actually I think it looks really good. Ive reused some elements from the previous but this time you've got a family with their backs turned watching tv. This is meant to symbolise forgotten/ignored. I could maybe put something relevant on screen but I think the fact they are watching football make it even more sad that they haven't noticed the refugees who are right there. They are also taking for granted their comforts. I do think this one is marginally less instantly understandable as the first design however, so that's something to consider. This design is more for the spot illustration I think. I really like this idea I think its really strong. I initially put a posh boat on top of the sea of refugees but I wasn't sure if people would know that this meant better off people are ignoring them. I then had the idea to put the government building of Myanmar on top which represents how they are reaching out to their government for change but also that the government is riding off the backs of the innocent civilians who desperately need support.
This is a mock up of another design I came up with but I changed the people at the bottom into a crowd of protestors instead of migrating refugees because I think it makes the message more coherent- they are protesting against the armed forces. I have kept the soldiers head cut off as his identity isn't important, he is part of a whole body run by the government. the people are tiny in comparison to the soldier, showing how powerful he is. I had another idea which I may mock up which is this same design except his shadow is made up of people instead, which would further show how the civilians are in the shadow of the government. This could work as a cover or even as a spot illustration if adapted.

This design definitely works better with the shadow instead of the circle. Its more meaningful as well as visually interesting.
I still really like this idea but I think it might be missing something that the others have, perhaps it would work better as a spot illustration but I'm not too sure and may have to come back to this one. I am just not sure what it needs, it may just be the placement on the page that I don't like.
This is much better in my opinion for a cover but not as good for a spot illustration. I like how it has a command over the page and draws you in. The image is central and the houses are bigger. Of course this would be much more detailed and refined but this is the mock up and I like it. This is my least favourite design that Ive developed and I won't be taking it further. I think its just the angle and how visually unappealing it is in my opinion and there are better contenders for development
